Co-created by leading specialists and patient advocates, Breast Advocate is a free breast cancer surgery app that provides all available surgical options along with evidence-based and personalized recommendations, as well as a community to rely on.
Challenge
A board-certified surgeon specializing in breast cancer, who is also a big advocate for "shared decision-making" - a term coined in the 80's regarding the collaborative process where healthcare professionals and patients work together to make decisions about the patient's care - needed to give better tools to his patients as well as improve outcomes.
Goal
We had to design a platform that was easy to use and could help navigate the complexities of a harsh diagnosis in layman terms. Patients needed access and guidance to curated content that was easy to consume, in the form of a journey map, and to also be able to connect and empathize with other patients, advocates, and professionals.
Solution
We created Breast Advocate, a mobile app (available for both iOS and Android devices) that lets patients, advocates, and doctors to interact and go through this difficult journey together. Shared decision-making in general and this platform in particular have proven to provide benefits for patients such as improved understanding and knowledge, greater satisfaction and trust, reduced anxiety and better outcomes, and for healthcare providers inckuding stronger patient-provider relationships, more realistic expectations, and efficient resource utilization.
